We do not take insurance. However, many of our clients use insurance benefits to pay for a portion of therapy sessions through their out-of-network benefits (OON). Many insurance companies have out-of-network benefits in their plans including:
- Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Aetna
- Cigna
- Humana
- Tricare
- UMR
- United Healthcare
- And others
Some things to consider when deciding whether to use out-of-network benefits or not…
There are benefits to paying for services directly and not involving insurance. One of the biggest advantages is complete confidentiality. Your treatment stays between you and your therapist. When clients enact their OON benefits, clients must receive a diagnosis that will be reported to the insurance company, and the carrier has authority to access all client records including session notes. For clients wanting increased privacy, not using OON benefits may be the best way to go.
What’s the process for using OON benefits?
The first step is to determine if your specific plan contains OON benefits. You need to check with your insurance company by calling the customer service number (that’s usually on the back of your card). If you’re not sure what questions to ask, let us know, and we can supply you with a guide to facilitate your conversation with the insurance company.
For clients with OON benefits, we can supply a “Superbill,” which is basically a detailed receipt that shows exactly what you paid for sessions. Clients can then submit their Superbill to their insurance company and be reimbursed for a portion of their out-of-pocket expense.
It is the responsibility of our clients to provide payment at the time of service, understand their specific OON benefits, and facilitate the process of reimbursement.
