Frequently Asked Questions

What is your style of therapy?

In our sessions, we will examine what brought you to therapy in order to develop understanding and insight into the problem. Additionally, there is a skills component where we determine what to do about the problem and implement strategies to help. We primarily use a Cognitive Behavioral framework to guide sessions. This is an approach supported by substantial research that helps people adjust problematic thinking and behaviors. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a logical and practical approach that teaches clients real skills they can take with them and apply to problems throughout their lives. And…we like sharing laughs with our clients. Therapy doesn’t always have to be so serious.

How often should I come?

We leave session frequency in the control of our clients. They call the shots in terms of how often they’d like to attend. For best results, research supports clients coming to therapy once per week to start out and then spacing out sessions as they feel better. So, ideally, it’s best for clients to follow that model. However, if that doesn’t fit, clients can determine what’s right for them.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them, and the length of time varies quite a bit. Some people come to session for a few months, and other clients engage in therapy for much longer. The length depends on how often you’re attending session, your goals, your efforts outside of sessions, and the severity of symptoms that motivated you to seek therapy in the first place. Most of the time, therapy concludes when clients feel they’ve gotten what they need and symptoms have improved. Deciding when it’s time for therapy to end will be an ongoing discussion between you and your therapist.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. Clients that have the best outcomes are those who are engaged in sessions, willing to consider alternative perspectives, implement the concepts we discuss, and put effort into consistently working on their issues outside of sessions.

What about medication?

The focus of therapy is to alleviate symptoms by increasing insight, enhancing awareness, and developing skills to make changes in your life. Therapy by itself is highly effective in treating depression and anxiety, and many people elect to address their issues using therapy alone. However, medication can also be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy. If symptoms are especially severe or persistent, medication may be indicated. We can assist in helping you connect with a local medication prescriber if you are interested in pursuing medication.
